Would you like to write for us?

Kali, Avatar of the eBook (c) Kandinski [Flickr]Collca is an electronic publisher specialising in short-form (bitesize) non-fiction ebooks for popular ereaders such as the Kindle, Kobo, Nook and Apple's iBooks on the iPad, iPhone and iPod.

Currently we publish the ebooks in seven series as well as a small number of titles that don't fit into any of the series. The current series are:

We're now keen to hear from authors who could write short-form non-fiction ebooks particularly ones that would fit into BiteSize Biography, BiteSize History or BiteSize Travel. Please don't suggest titles for In the Footsteps of.... as this series which was exclusively written by Angela Youngman is now closed.

The key features of the short-form ebooks are that they should be well-structured and contain between 20,000 and 25,000 words; ideally closer to the latter. They should be written for the general public rather than for experts. Pictures and diagrams are desirable but not essential.

If you're interested, we'd love to hear from you. To be able to consider your ideas for a short-form ebook, we need you to provide the following information:

  • Suggested title.
  • Overview of the proposed ebook - about 250-400 words.
  • List of the likely sections in the proposed ebook. Please include any appendices or ancillary sections in the list.
  • What type of illustrations you intend to include and how you will source them.
  • First 2000 words of the proposed ebook or the complete work if you've already written it.
  • Brief biography of yourself telling us who you are and why you're the best person to write this ebook.
  • Indication of how long it will take you to complete the proposed ebook once we give you the go-ahead.
  • Details of who you think will buy the ebook, what sort of groups they would belong to, and what magazines and websites they're likely to read.

Please send your proposal to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Once we receive your proposal we will acknowledge receipt by email as quickly as we can.

Our review process is quite straightforward. We read and assess every proposal we receive against a number of criteria. These include the quality of the proposal and sample text, how well we think the ebook would sell, and whether we've already accepted an ebook on the same or very similar subject from someone else.

Having reviewed it we'll get back to you either with any questions or with our decision as quickly as possible. Normally we would expect this to be within 3-4 weeks but please allow a little longer at Christmas, New Year and other holiday times.

If we accept your proposal we will both sign our standard contract and agree a schedule. This will take into account the indication of how long it would take you to complete the ebook that you give in your proposal as well as our existing publishing commitments. Once agreed, it is important that we both stick to the schedule.

Here are some important things you need to know before you decide whether you'd like to write for Collca:

  • We pay an industry-leading 50% royalty rate based on the sales revenue we receive from online stores - without any deductions. Sales are reported to you monthly and royalties paid quarterly.
  • We don't charge you for either reading your proposal or for publishing your ebook.
  • We don't pay an advance to authors.
  • You retain the copyright for the content.
  • You assign all publishing rights of the content to us for a minimum of 5 years.
  • You are responsible for all aspects of the content including text, illustrations and, if appropriate, audio-visual clips.
  • Spelling, grammar, style and vocabulary are very important as we don't expect to do major copy-editing.
  • We've found from experience that ebooks are more readable if sentences are kept fairly short and paragraphs don't exceed 90-100 words. If they're longer than that their emphasis can be lost by being split across lots of pages.
  • We are responsible for all technical aspects including formatting the content, testing the completed ebook, submitting it to online stores and supporting users.
  • We normally expect to submit the completed ebook to online stores within 3-4 weeks of receiving the full content - a little longer at Christmas, New Year and other holiday times.
  • You and we are jointly responsible for actively promoting the ebook by appropriate means including press releases, listing it on our own websites, promoting it on social media websites such as Facebook, Goodreads, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Scoop.it and Twitter.

We look forward to receiving your proposal. If you have any questions please use the enquiry form.
